Luke 1:26 - 39
Mary was just a girl. Because in context, people were pledged to be married around 12.
1) Ask the Right Questions
Mary asked a question of direction, not a question of doubt. (the angel gave further instructions)
A few verse before, Zechariah asked a question of doubt and got mute for 9 months.
Most of us were scared when facing our calling, but we got to have the right response. Stop
There were people who never believed that Mary was carrying God’s child.
The Devil wants to overwhelm us with very general thoughts. But the Holy Spirit impresses specifically in our hearts, reveals next step.
When I just put my head down and do my job, God will send the confirmation (which He gave to mary)
2) Remember who you are (luke 1:38)
When I feel like i'm not enough, i'm usually focusing on who i’m not rather than who I am.
Mary saw herself as God’s chosen instrument for this assignment. And she spent more time focusing on who God was. (in Mary’s prayer later on)
When I feel overwhelmed, my normal response is to think of all the reasons why I’m the wrong person and think of all the times I failed, the things I’ve tried. And then my thoughts goes to ‘maybe i just quit’. Not even physically quit but mentally check out.
Lean in and remember God’s past faithfulness and God’s present strength.
3) Move toward your mission (v39)
Instead of being paralyzed with fear, Mary immediately get on to do what the angel told her to.
Some of us feel so lost, so deep in our cave. We don’t know what our calling is anymore. In 1 King 19, God told Elijah to go back the way he came. Go back and do the last thing that God told you to do and He would give you the next step. Obey the next step God gave you and He will give you the next. “You feel this way because you are out of position”
It doesn’t mean that after we obey the first step everything will be smooth sailing. Mary had a long road ahead of her - give birth in a barn, 2 years of her life on the run protecting Jesus and eventually watch Him die on the cross. If God showed her the full picture, she would’ve been scared to death.
Jeremiah 1:4-8
I want to be a girl who is willing to be used by Him in anyways that He calls me.
