Live Dogs & Dead Lions (Brian Houston)

Ecclesiastes 9:4

4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[b]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

It was more like a dog than a lion.

It was humble, but the one thing we did have was Life.

'in the last 3 weeks of his life he led 30 ppl to Jesus. but the fruits of his life has never stopped from then till this day.'

Don't be discouraged with where you're at because it can be how Jesus will use it to do something great. A live dog is better than a dead lion.

There are so many things that are big and impressive. But they are empty and dead. eg. European cathedrals. It's more a memorial than a on going church.

Empty things echo. Rooms full of life and movement and people, thats places full of life. What does a dead lion look like in my ministry?

Your christian walk could become a dead lion. becomes a ritual.

Word Studies

Sin

commonly translated as: Transgressions / Rebellion / Trespass

hebrew: khata

- original word has no spiritual meaning. it means to fail or to miss the goal

- the goal: failure to love God and others by not treating them with the honor they deserve

- 10 commandments (half is fail to love God, half is fail to love people. therefore sin against ppl is sin against God. sin is a failure to be truly human)

- most of the time when ppl fail, they either dk or think they succeeded (eg, Pharoah's enslavement of israelites was good to him, Saul thought he was bringing David to justice)

"Sin describes how we easily deceive ourselves and spin illusions to redefine our decisions as good ones"

greek: hamartia

- Paul described it as force that rules humans

- we are slaves to it and it lives in us

sin: failure to be humans who fully love God and others. inability to judge whether we are succeeding or failing. deep selfish impulse that drives much of our behavior.

1 Peter 2:22 - 24

-----------------------------------------------------

Transgressions

commonly translated as: Transgressions / Rebellion / Trespass

hebrew: pesha (noun) or pasha (verb)

- describes the betrayal of a relationship (2 nations breaking treaties)

- a violation of trust

The violation of the universal trust that exists between all humans who are made in the image of God.

eg. for idolatry, slavery, murdering innocent.

in the book of Amos where leaders ignore or justify the mistreatment of humans for national security of strong economy. (betrayal of humanity)

greek: paraptoma

Paul talked about Humanity breaking trust with God. The paraptoma of Adam.

Romans 5:12 - 21

greek: paraptoma

Paul talked about Humanity breaking trust with God. The paraptoma of Adam.

Romans 5:12 - 21

God raised up a human that would allow our trespass to do its worst to Him. (the suffering servant)

"God's response to humanity's pesha and paraptoma was to be trustworthy on our behalf. God took responsibility for our betrayal so that He could open a new future and new way to be human"

Why Must I Come

Church meetings,

how often do we feel obliged or pressurized to attend them. There is this universal dread of lethargy in turning up for yet another meeting or church activity. Well, there are only several options that I’ve arrived at – 1) we willingly commit ourselves to church 2) we drag ourselves to attend 3) we attend only when it’s convenient to or 4) we simply choose not to turn up.

This isn’t me preaching about the value of showing up, not today anyway. But if we would examine our hearts and attitudes towards attending church meetings, there is something much deeper than a general distaste towards commitment. There is a fundamental flaw in our perspectives towards Church and her activities.

We either consciously or unconsciously weigh the benefits and costs of attending church activities as we do so to any other secular activities be it school, interest groups, sports, handing out with friends or spending time with family. The focus of such a mentality is Self – if I perceive the activity to be beneficial, I’d show up.

Conversely, if it’s not beneficial to me, I wouldn’t want to be there. If a particular NTU lecture is boring, students are likely to give it a miss, or if they somehow to attend, they hardly stay attentive to it. But behold, when examinations approaches, students start attending lectures again because of the perceive benefits from attending (to get exam tips) or the apparent costs of not attending (missing out on tips). If you’d look closely, all of us carry such a mentality.

Well, we could all blame it on our limited time or energy we possess. So many activities competing for our attention every day. Prioritizing or sacrificing a lesser activity becomes inevitable. And the very root of it is selfishness that exists in all of us – Christian or not.

A long time ago, Jesus came and taught us a different kind of mentality we should carry. And even today He still teaches us. Matthew 20:28 describes it, “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (See also Mark 10:43-45). Jesus taught us not to put ourselves first. If we are sincere in following Him, then we’re here to serve and not to be served.

One reason why the church exists is to serve God and His people. So, we cannot view church with the same lens that we use to view the activities of our everyday life. Why must I come? The question we’re actually asking is ‘What’s there for me?”. Any leader can offer you many ‘unconvincing’ answers to that, but we fail to realize that we’re asking the wrong question. Jesus showed us that the attitude we should carry is one that asks, “How can I serve?”, or “What can I do for God and His people today?”

So whenever you feel that sense of dread to show up at church, remember that Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Should we follow Him, then this is the attitude we must learn.

Jesus has now many lovers of the heavenly kingdom but few bearers of His cross. – Thomas a Kempis, Imitation of Christ

Pastor Shirley

1) GENERAL

- don’t be emotionally involved too fast. don’t assume. know if it’s towards the task or leader.
- don’t be afraid of having honest convo. don’t be conflict avoider
- strike common ground, ask on scale how easy is it for them to follow our leadership. talk things out
- instead of grouping them as passive, what’s blocking them from being motivated? if they know God’s vision it’s quite hard to stand there and do nothing (opportunities?
- don’t give them a role that ends in a task. give a goal that helps the see the end. empower them.
- with emotional ppl, guard ur own heart that we dont get drained. give space and know when to talk. they want emo or solve issue.
- it’s not a black or white issue. it’s more where u are walking towards. pray together and talk abt pragmatic ways. might have relapse, it’s a lifetime struggle when ppl share give a poker but sympathetic face.

in conclusion
- discipleship is the only way to make an impact. i cant be everywhere and doing everything.

Pastor Christie

1) GENERAL

- stop using ur personality as an excuse

- if God is God then pour urself in. why make a fool out of your life.
- time management, emotional management, money management.
- if u want god to use u in a big way, u got o learn. if u can’t even manage urself how u want to manage ppl
- take care of ur finances so u can focus and do god’s work
- anything good from ur culture keep, anything not biblical throw.
- be humble to go and ask ppl to pray for you. those who obviously have fruits and have anointing. that’s honoring leaders not just titles
- guard ourselves from the spirit of offence. especially when i’m young, don’t be so easily offended. - if this is really for u, settle down and go all the way dont waste time anymore

2) LEADERSHIP
- BE CONSISTENT. popular leader or unpopular leader who says the truth even if they leave church
- be EXCELLENT.
- build the rs with ur TEAM. and ppl got to see this team spirit. (the team is there
- build the culture of honoring. (teach the value. Matthew 10:41) anointing comes by importation if u don’t honor how u want to get the anointing

- “idw to argue with u abt catholicism. i bring u to God and let God deal with u”

 - there must be a growing sense of fear towards God. i’m not going to take any credit.

 - as leaders we must have constant encounters with God ourselves. if not where is the freshness goibg to come from. (can also be earthly encounters like God sent ppl etc) - i’m a SPIRITUAL leader not manager or director. take care of ur own walk with God first

 - a lot of ministries birth out from devotions. don’t just do a lot and work hard. make urself available for God. - copy bible.

3) DISCIPLESHIP
- disciple and master. is always disciple chase master. not the other way round. 徒弟拜师. if u get rejected, go again.
- pastor christie lock herself in her room 8hrs to wait for god to speak. willing to obey even if it looks stupid and foolish
- train ur spiritual senses to be in tune with the hs.
- ppl come church so many years they can predict what’s going to happen. we just need them to have 1 encounter with God is better than 10000 sermons. (it’s never wq agenda but God’s agenda)

- ppl fight with the world out there 6 days. when they come to church they don’t want another religious programme.
- SEEK GOD. and break forms if we need. (give God back His stage) don’t have to be predictable.
- the BEING to the DOING to the HAVING. (let God deal with the spirit, deal with my spirit)
- salvation is super important. there are only two types of ppl on this earth (saved or not saved)

Pastor Dennis

1) GENERAL
- if we take small steps in obedience. making bigger decisions won’t seem like a leap
- really reflect on things and decide to make changes (set time aside) reflect my motive and my words
- just choose one point from sermon and whole week think abt it.

- sermon must address our concern. the bible has the truth, look at what is happening. the needs are still the same.

- the motivation to be like christ, struggle like siao but still choose God. no matter where u are you will end up reaching christ

2) LEADERSHIP
- isit my vision or my leaders vision
- keep asking ‘is this the best way’ everyone must own it
- leadership role is to refuse to believe that whatever we are doing is best and figure things out.
- there’s no hard ground if we believe that the gospel is effective. plant the gospel, the gospel will grow the church.
- for our gen, a lot of stimuli, no commitment.
- inspire ppl to be a disciple FIRST. not a disciple maker. God will raise them up and release them into the marketplace.
- ‘question me if u are unsure’ - own it, work on it but don’t let it distract u.

- leadership and interpersobel skills will make u a valuable asset wherever - personalise visions. own the land together. living on this land and i will die for this land. ‘i own ntu engineering. and i will do anything for it’ meeting needs, take care of it not just outreach
- rub shoulders and live it out so ppl know that i own the vision

3) CULTURE
- create a very strong sub culture. make it a NORM. for ppl to serve, enough critical mass to role model to challenge ppl.
- challenging ppl to not be a sunday christian. but to follow the christ that they know rightfully.
- there’s always a reason. find out WHY ppl dw to be mobilised. challenge small steps until they suddenly they are there (immediate next step)
- let ppl know what journey they are in. tell them what they need to learn out of this
- don’t come to church with a corporate mentality but a servant mentality.
